My friend had the thin, and he raved about it. My wife and I split a Detroit, and it was one of the best pizzas I've had. The detroit is like the chicago, but the cheese goes all the way to the edge, so the edge of the crust carmalizes.
And true to traditional deep dish pizza, the cheese went on first, then the toppings, with the sauce on the top. The sauce was excellent, the crust fantastic, and the toppings very good as well.
They don't serve anything but pizza, but it's great. Oh, they also have a mission statement: The recipes used to make Tomaso's pizza are top notch in my book. The original owner of the original Tomaso's pizzeria in Cedar Rapids started living out the mission statement he later gave to his pizza shop, "Make Good Pizza," by traveling all over the United States eating at different pizza joints in each of the cities he visited.
From Chicago to New York, from Detroit to California, and anywhere else he heard about or read about great pizza he traveled there to try the pizza. Whenever he found truly great pizza he would ask about the different "building blocks" that made that pizza great. Through these travels he found the best sauce, the best ingredients, and brought together the best crust recipes that he could find and he started making pizzas at home for family and friends to tweak and perfect his pizza.
I can't tell you how many times I have eaten at a Tomaso's Pizza place in Cedar Rapids or Hiawatha Iowa, but each and every time I think of this story which I heard from the original owner himself and I am thankful that he went through all this trouble. I have had one or two "chef error" or equipment error moments where a pizza was under cooked or the wrong ingredients were put on the pizza however in these cases the staff bent over backwards to make thing right and make sure we were satisfied.
Any place I travel this pizza is the standard by which I rate other pizza's whether thick or thing crust, my wife and I both taste a new pizza and try and determine if it is "as good as" Tomaso's Pizza in Cedar Rapids Iowa. So if you are in the area check this pizza out. It is more expensive than Pizza Hut or Domino's but as with many things in this world, "you get what you pay for. After our wedding reception, 12 years ago now, my new wife and I were both hungry so we went to our favorite pizza joint, Tomaso's on edgewood road.
Because of this, whenever possible, we try and get to a Tomaso's every August 2nd to celebrate our anniversary. To the reviewer that said they never have coupons: I get them in the mail and I have gotten them in the newspaper. I use a coupon almost every time I go there. Tomaso's is our family favorite.
We love the Detroit.
We take out of town guests there and have yet to disappoint anyone. It does cost a little more than other places, but you know what they say: No complaints on food, service or atmosphere! Exactly what you want from a pizza place!
