Can you post pics of some of the studs? Do they seem to have good projection of the carbides? Post 21 has pictures. Originally Posted by Iffykid. Blaine, Mn. I see your from Blaine. If the last couple of years of icy trails continue to be the norm you will LOVE studs. Not required but it'll inspire confidence and increase your speeds. I am old and slow so not concerned with increased speed more concerned with unintentional dismounts. Never rode in winter but thinking about getting out of the house for a little exercise.

Agree though if you are looking at a new fat bike or even new winter tires for a fat bike I'd lean toward studdable tires that take standard studs rather than grip-studding tires not-meant to be studded, if only due to costs. Want studs that stick out further than most? Check out 45Nrth XL studs. I just put of these in a Bontrager Gnarwhal. Funny you should ask. I decided not to use them to supplement my D5's and one other set of tires but my buddy who has Minions wanted to put them in. As I mentioned no tool was included but thebionicman was nice enough to send me his.

Gave the studs and tool to my buddy and he installed them.

Communication with the seller was OK but I had ask for at least 3 tools and only 1 came in our bag which made installation a greater pain!

Out of , I would say at least are useless. Some have almost no stud protruding, others have too much stud protruding. But given that the chinese version is cheaper and that I knew what I was getting into, I feel they are OK. Now that they are installed installation of these regardless of price paid is a PITA But in retrospective, kiven the time I waited, the time I took to install them, and the overall buying experience; if I were to do it again, given my situation, I would spit out the cash to buy locally out of the box fully studded tires!

The exposed carbide is the same as a grip stud. I saw them screwed into the sole of a shoe and they didn't look like they were sticking out too far. I can't imagine many would pull out. I would like to try them but have no need at the moment.

Much cheaper so I thought I'd throw it out there. I know this thread hasn't been updated in awhile, but a month ago I ordered some JX knock off studs off AliExpress. The seller claims they are stainless steel with a carbide tip. Dimensionally they look like they'll be extremely close to grip studs. They've shipped but haven't arrived yet. I'll be sure to update this when I get them!

Right now riding in Wisconsin is pretty brutal without them! Link below. Studs have arrived! Just over a month in transit. Pretty average compared to the other orders I've placed on AliExpress. I'll cut right to the chase. Overall I'm just moderately satisfied with the studs. I spent time going through the entire bag sorting and inspecting and I have noticed a huge amount of variation. After sorting I counted studs total which is nice always to get a few extras.

Out of the , 88 are bad and what I consider un-usable. I eventually went back through the 87 "okay" studs and picked out some of the better ones to throw in with the good quality ones. Bad studs: These studs are of poor quality and have defects like missing carbide tips, solder that covers the carbide, carbide that is too long and carbide that is too short.

Okay studs: These studs have smaller defects like extra solder around the carbide, slightly shorter or longer carbide and slightly angled carbide. Good studs: These aren't all perfect, but they definitely will do their job. Just like above there are some imperfections, but they're smaller issues that I think will be fine. Most of the issues I've seen in my batch of studs are related to the carbide tips. I doubt there is an automated manufacturing system in place making these in China, so I have to assume that people are soldering and placing these on an assembly line leading to defects.

I haven't seen any issues with bending in the threads or anything like that. I did reach out to the seller on AliExpress and asked for either replacement studs or a partial refund but haven't heard back. We'll see what happens! I've had decent luck before getting a refund on some other products. After sorting I started installation on my tires. Up front I'm running a 26x4. The lugs have a channel molded in them which makes inserting the studs pretty difficult. Eventually I got more used to inserting and threading them in, but studs went flying across the room a few times.

I'm sticking to a hand screwdriver for control and I think it's working better now that I've had time to put a few in. I did borrow a unique ratchet style screw driver from work and it makes it much easier to insert. I haven't peirced through the inner wall of the tire yet, but when I feel the inside of the Nate I can feel the stud thread slightly bulging into the inner wall.

Last night I wrapped up my Bud with studs and tonight I'll work more on the Nate.

I'm thinking it'll be somewhere around or so. I can always add more! I'll update the post when I have more information! Ride on! I finished studding the tires last week and was finally able to take them out for a ride this Friday. Our trails here in Wisconsin are glare ice currently with almost no snow. I went out when it was about 26 degrees out and the studs performed really well!

I couldn't set my tires up tubeless because my pump couldn't seat the bead with the large volume of air required. The past few days of riding I've been playing with the pressure and I think I've decided that a lower pressure works best for maximizing traction.

Overall I'd say I'm pretty impressed with the studs for the price. I feel pretty confident out on the trails and I've only lost one stud that I know of. I even screwed some studs into my winter riding boots to help with traction when I'm forced to hike my bike. The seller on Aliexpress has offered to send replacement studs free of charge so I think I'm going to jump on the opportunity! Hopefully this next batch looks a bit better. In the meantime I'll continue to play with the setup and keep an eye out for any issues.

I'll update this thread if anything new comes up! How are removing and adding to tires year after year? Fatbike, XC bike, Gravel Bike Originally Posted by solarplex.

Partial refund As I noted above of the studs I received were not really that great. Initially the seller offered to send me replacements which I would have been fine with but after a few days AliExpress automatically ruled the case in my favor. I'd say it was a really painless experience.

Probably easier than eBay even. Anyways, with the refund complete I guess I can't complain about the value at all. I've been able to ride on glare ice the last few weeks and am having a blast. I also screwed some of the studs into my riding boots and they're working and holding up great even though I'm walking on pavement every once and awhile! Anyone tried Grip Studs on Hodag? Do they even have a carbide tip then? An all steel stud wouldn't last long, and I doubt they cast them out of solid carbide. Join Date Oct Posts Are you guys clicking on the link? What I am seeing is the quantity linked to shows up not available anymore, it was also around 9 bucks shipping when it was live. Makes them around 55 cents a stud, far better than a buck a stud but makes the risk on a deal like that a bit shaky!

My two cents!

Try AliExpress as they are geared toward smaller orders. Though given my experience with shipping from China this time of year it could be 2 months before your order arrives.
