We wasted over an hour of our lunchtime here and we were not happy about the service. We wont be coming back unfortunately. The food on the other hand was delicious. Other than that, bc the service was so slow and there wasnt that many people there in his section, I give my 1 star. If you're looking for authentic Chinese cuisine, this is not the place for it. But if you're interested in having a nice quiet dinner in a child-friendly restaurant that serves western-favorite Chinese food, then this is a good place to go.
They're noted for their Walnut prawns, which we ordered and enjoyed. I can't say there was any dish that really stood out. The food tastes decent. They're priced on the mid-range level. For a place located right in the heart of Sacramento, the premium for the location and setting is understandable. Service was exceptional. Our server was prompt and knowledgeable.
We had a good experience for a large party of diners. My main reason to frequent this restaurant was bc I craved honey walnut shrimp. I had seen an ad in one of the local freebie papers where Frank Fat's was offering their 79th anniversary special. That honey walnut prawns was the best ever we had. I requested medium rare though it was more like rare. I didn't mind it at all! Hubby likes his steak medium. Fried rice was fabulous. The chicken was Cantonese plain though the veggies were cooked perfectly. Frank Fat's well known popular banana cream pie topped the evening off for me perfectly as the most scrumptious dessert.
I did order a strawberry margarita mocktail just before we had our dinner though I didn't get to finish it.
Too much for my tummy at one sitting that we ended up with leftover food to go! After our most recent visit come to find out that one can park in the next door parking structure for seven bucks. It's right before one reaches Frank Fat's restaurant on the same left side.
That is the going rate in that area for parking. I loved the oriental classy yet elegant ambiance of this longtime downtown restaurant. Frank would have been proud. I kept snapping pictures inside that restaurant bc it was like a private Asian museum. I'm so glad I made the choice to dine here finally after so many years abstaining from it. It was more like a belated anniversary celebration bc at the time we had too many irons in the fire. I know now we will return as Luis our waiter was perfect in every way service wise.
He was an absolute godsend. We would return sooner than later. And that's an absolute promise! Really delicious dinner. Beautiful rooms. Very good service. The egg rolls were really delicious. Try the spicy chili sauce. Best soup dumplings I've had in a while. We'll be back! A restaurant in downtown Sacramento that serves Chinese American fare. Although it seems popular with the locals and is apparently a staple with congressional staffers being close to the capital , this spot warrants no more than 3 stars overall.
Being from the South Bay, you become spoiled with the best Asian food. But even when that premium factor is adjusted for, the prices for the food here is average, service is below average, location is sub-par, and interior design is above average. We came here for dinner on our way back from Lake Tahoe to San Jose. The first thing we notice is that this restaurant is not in the best neighborhood.
Downtown Sacramento is not the best place at night. We had to park a couple blocks away. Vacant lots, sketch people, bad lighting. But when we entered the restaurant it was a The interior of the restaurant was very posh.
Metallic designs, very modern and sleek. Different - and definitely one of the best designed Chinese restaurants I've been in. The second thing I noticed immediately upon entering was that the place was totally packed, but there was not a single Asian person in the restaurant. That was of course no problem. But it was surprising. It also tells you about the market segment they cater to. This place does get a lot of great business. The way you have to view this restaurant is as Chinese American fare, not Chinese.
That way you're setting expectations correctly. We ordered a lamb dish, pork dish, and the banana cream pie. Even by those standards, it was just okay. The service was quite disheveled - we were served by 4 different waiters, and wait time was quite long. The legendary Frank Fat's, where deals are made and mass quantities of Chinese food are consumed!
It has a long and interesting history in California's state capital, first opening in and is still owned by the same family. Its reputation as an outstanding Chinese restaurant is well deserved, as everything we ordered was simply delicious. Though most everything was "standard" for the cuisine, it had flavors that were simply a step above other places I've been. And I've been to a lot of Chinese restaurants! The honey walnut prawns were like candy, and the dish only lasted about a minute or two on the table before they were gone.
The Mongolian beef was excellent, as was the house special chow mein and other dishes we ordered. Service was outstanding and personable, and the hot tea was really, really good.
We probably polished off three or four pots of the stuff. The meal was capped off by some of the legendary banana cream pie, which was also amazingly tasty. It was light enough to be the perfect touch on a superb meal. Stop by for lunch or dinner if you can, you will not be disappointed! Just left here for Dine Downtown week. Extremely disappointed at the quality of food here. Overly glazed food, Ive had better mall chinese food than what we had here.
The dine downtown menu offered two appetizers Egg roll and some deep friend ball of meat of sorts , the main entre was glazed prawns, crispy chicken also glazed and peppered steak and pork fried rice. Everything tasted awful! I could barely take a few bites and then put everything down, The dessert option was banana or chocolate cream pie. It tasted like cool whip on crust. Way too expensive for the quality from it looked like everyone was walking away with a bag full of food they didn't eat.
Wont be back. This place is a solid classy Chinese restaurant. The Frank Fats chow mein was delicious. The Peking duck was cooked very well and the buns were soft and fluffy. I didn't love the immigrants beef but the marinade was tasty. The service was on point and we never had to really wait when we needed something. I will probably make this my go to Chinese food restaurant in Sacramento because I really loved the noodles and the experience.
Egg rolls were really greasy and the banana cream pie was too expensive for what it was. The meal I had of spring lamb was exquisite! Even though our meal was late getting out our hostess made sure we knew and apologized to us. Not a problem. And when the finally came. It was worth it! The place I would recommend a reservation. Best Chinese food in Sacramento hands down. Best honey walnut prawns I've ever had.. Thank you Frank Fats! Made last minute reservations thru Open Table for this evening and was glad to choose this restaurant as I've never dined here before in the downtown location.
The prix fixe menu was served family style and included the following this year for Plenty between the two of us! Both were delightful, not too sweet and I love the crust.
The Banana Cream Pie was my favorite between the two! The meal was yummy, delicious and very well prepared. Thanks to Executive Chef Quentin Truong. Our server, Nina, was nice and efficient in clearing our table of used dishes and getting our water glasses refilled. Great service! Although I'd love to come back some time for another dining experience I'm not sure when another opportunity will arise. There's so many other restaurants I'd love to try in the downtown area. Review Ahhhh , Sacramento Restaurant week Our 2nd year participate. My wife reserve dinner for both of us.
First off the appetizers It was very tasty. And on the main course are honey walnut shrimp, crispy chicken, and pepper pork with our fried rice.
It was very delicious and the portions are just enough. At this time we are so full and could not finish them. Frank Fats is pretty elegant sit down dinner table in the heart of downtown Sacramento. A good place to have a formal dinner. The service was excellent. Claim your listing for free to respond to reviews, update your profile and much more. Was expecting maybe it would be packed from judging the amount of activity going on around the handle area but it was over half empty. Fox E. I could barely take a few bites and then put everything down, The dessert option was banana or chocolate cream pie. Mimced Chicken lettuce wraps. Was told no exceptions.
