Responses to the General Health Questionnaire GHQ from natives and two generations of immigrants were used to analyze the three levels of bias. While the basic structure of the GHQ was stable across groups and time, item and method bias decreased with repeated administrations.

Results were confirmed with a sensitivity test. The integrated results allowed for a distinction between temporal sources of bias that became smaller over time and sources affecting valid comparisons persistently. We discuss the implications for mental health assessment. The structure and application for cross-cultural studies — a 38 nation study.

Oct The study aimed to examine the factor structure and to explore the cross cultural utility of the MHC-SF using bifactor models and exploratory structural equation modelling ESEM. MGCFA supported the cross-cultural replicability of a bifactor structure and a metric level of invariance between student samples.

The metric level of invariance offers the possibility of comparing correlates and predictors of positive mental functioning across countries; however, the comparison of the levels of mental health across countries is not possible due to lack of scalar invariance. Our study has preliminary character and could serve as an initial assessment of the structure of the MHC-SF across different cultural settings. Further studies on general populations are required for extending our findings.

A Comparison of Common Procedures. This study aims to evaluate a number of procedures that have been proposed to enhance cross-cultural comparability of personality and value data.

A priori procedures anchoring vignettes and direct measures of response styles i. We found that i anchoring vignettes showed lack of invariance, so they were not bias-free; ii anchoring vignettes showed higher internal consistencies than raw scores where all other correction procedures, notably ipsatization, showed lower internal consistencies; iii in measurement invariance testing, no procedure yielded scalar invariance; anchoring vignettes and item parcelling slightly improved comparability, response style correction did not affect it, and ipsatization resulted in lower comparability; iv treating Likert-scale data as categorical resulted in higher levels of comparability; v factor scores of scales extracted from different procedures showed similar correlational patterning; and vi response style correction was the only procedure that suggested improvement in external validity of country-level conscientiousness.

We conclude that, although no procedure resolves all comparability issues, anchoring vignettes, parcelling, and treating data as ordered categories seem promising to alleviate incomparability. We advise caution in uncritically applying any of these procedures. Aug Inclusive Identity Project. We are finally getting all our data in to start with our analyses of for this project.

Jul Changing values and identities in post-communist world. Identity and acculturation: The case for Africa. Apr Despite the multicultural nature of African societies, there is still very little knowledge about acculturation and its association with identity on this continent. Acculturation processes and outcomes are strongly associated with identity.

The objective of this article is to relate different models of acculturation unidimensional, bidimensional, multidimensional with the tridimensional model of identity personal, relational, and social. Social identity components, such as ethnicity, religion, and culture, suggest a need for modification of Western models of acculturation to embrace the multifaceted realities of non-Western multicultural societies.

The social complexity and the continuous transition within African societies provides unique opportunities to examine and further develop the multidimensional acculturation models to take into account the social complexity which informs identity issues both within and across different African nations. Identity experiences of black people in the Netherlands. In this study, we used the tri-dimensional model of identity and acculturation strategies to explore how black people living in the Netherlands define themselves.

Data was analysed using hermeneutic phenomenology in three steps: We derived several main themes: We associated the themes Acceptance, Inclusion, and Separation Contributors with acculturation and acculturative strategies. The other themes can be connected to the tri-dimensional identity model. Social membership and Social status are related to the social and relational aspects of identity, while Person-specific characteristics can be linked to personal identity. Lastly, the theme Stereotypes can be related to both acculturation and racism, but also personal identity as it shows how the participants perceive their self-concept to contradict the beliefs that mainstream Dutch society holds about them.

What is Social Deal

We conclude that identity construction among the black respondents was reliant on both their ethnic community membership and their membership of the mainstream Dutch community. New developments in personality and identity research across cultures. Assessing cultural intelligence, personality and identity amongst young white Afrikaans-speaking students: A preliminary study. Jan Personality and well-being in Black and White South African emerging adults. The aim of the SAPI is to assess personality in an unbiased and equivalent way.

Results Black emerging adults showed evidence of more individualistic-inclined personality features, while the White emerging adults seem to demonstrate more collectivistic features. In terms of health, the White emerging adults experience more life satisfaction than their Black counterparts. Conscientiousness, emotional stability, extraversion, facilitating and openness predict well-being among emerging adults. Conclusions This study contributes to expanding the nomological network of the SAPI, and it enhances knowledge pertaining to the link between personality and well-being of emerging adults in South Africa.

Understanding which factors contribute to poor mental health and lack of life satisfaction may lead to innovation programmes for emerging adults to assist them in dealing with negative health outcomes possibly associated with living in multicultural contexts.

Board and organisation

Emerging adults are at a vital stage in their personal development as they work towards negotiating their personal values and goals with those of their social groups, significant others and the society at large. The chapter examined the association between value priorities and well-being among emerging adults in South Africa, who grow up in a multicultural, multilingual country to which they are exposed to groups who are different to theirs.

Results indicated that personal value priorities correlated significantly with life satisfaction, positive and negative affect but not mental health. Intersubjective norms perceived value priorities of significant others and society showed no association with well-being. The effects of incongruence between reported personal value priorities and those of significant others were non-significant. We conclude that, personal values are more important for well-being than perceived values of significant others and larger society. Dec Aug The findings provide evidence of configural and partial metric invariance, as well as partial scalar invariance across samples.

The findings suggest that PWI-8 can be used to examine correlates of life satisfaction across all included countries, however it is impossible to compare raw scores across countries. Acculturation in Sub-Saharan Africa. Apr Cambridge University Press. We investigated whether Reggae preferences are associated with similar values across cultures compared with its culture of origin—Jamaica. Remote acculturation predicts that Reggae listeners across countries will share similar cultural values with Reggae listeners in Jamaica regardless of their cultural or geographical distance from the Caribbean island.

In Jamaica, preferences for Reggae music were most strongly correlated with openness to change values and self-enhancement values. Across the other cultures, openness to change was the value dimension most strongly correlated with Reggae preference. In sum, results provide some support for remote value acculturation via Reggae listening across countries i.

This cross-sectional study sampled 7, adolescents and emerging adults in 23 countries. A multi-group confirmatory factor analysis showed a good fit of configural and partial measurement weights invariance models, indicating similar patterns and strengths in factor loading for both adolescents and emerging adults across various countries.

A multi-level confirmatory factor analysis indicated configural invariance of the structure at country and individual level. Internal consistency, evaluated by alpha and omega coefficients per country, yielded acceptable results. The translated BMSLSS across different cultural contexts presents good psychometric characteristics similar to what has been reported in the original scale, though scalar invariance remains problematic.

Our results indicate that the BMSLSS forms a brief measure of life satisfaction, which has accrued substantial evidence of construct validity, thus suitable for use in cross-cultural surveys with adolescents and emerging adults, although evaluation of degree of invariance must be carried out to ensure its suitability for mean comparisons. The Process of Identity Work: Negotiating a Work Identity. Sep Conceptualising and Measuring Work Identity. Identity work is an important process in negotiating, regulating and maintaining a coherent sense of self- identity.

In this chapter we discuss how identity work is particularly useful in establishing a work identity.

Societal Participation & Health

The crux of the discussion in this chapter is based on the qualitative phase of the Work Identity Project and consists of four parts. The first deals with the conceptualisation of the terms identity work and work identity.

Employees followed various strategies for defining themselves at work and this may have some implications for employee work engagement and productivity. The key questions are: Social Psychology. University of Johannesburg. We derived several main themes: Aug Experience Work Project. Narcissism s and self-esteem s in cross-cultural context.

The second part provides an overview of models for work identity negotiation and outlines a framework developed in the context of the Work Identity Project. This is used to explore key concepts and processes of identity work and, more specifically, the concepts personal identity, individual agency, social identity, social practices and job and role context.

The third part of the chapter outlines various studies of identity work strategies and introduces nine different strategies developed as part of the Work Identity Project.

These are grouped according to four different themes that people may follow to develop and maintain their work identities. These four themes are personal philosophies, relationships, career management and negotiating balance. Thereafter, a framework for classifying identity work strategies is proposed. Finally, the chapter provides a summary of conclusions and implications for practice. Ethnic identity as a social dimension of identity is argued to be developmentally important for psychological well-being.

However, the relationships between these constructs are mainly examined in Western contexts, amongst dominant—non-dominant groups. We investigate ethnic identity across the mainstream group of a prototypical Western society the USA and several multi-ethnic sub-Saharan African countries Cameroon, Kenya, South Africa, and Zambia , as well as how it relates to psychological well-being. A total of university students Results indicated that ethnic identity was most salient in two different South African ethnocultural samples and least salient in a mainstream US sample.

These results suggest that groups that are more exposed to ethnic strain in multicultural societies tend to have more salient ethnic identities. Furthermore , the underlying structure in the ethnic identity psychological well-being relationship was similar across groups. Americanization in the Rainbow Nation: Receiving U. European-Americanized youth had higher life satisfaction than Traditionals and lower psychological distress than African-Americanized youth, after controlling for race. However, remote acculturation was not linked to family values or family conflict.

Taken together with prior research, the bicultural and multicultural patterns of remote acculturation profiles appear to be culture universals, although the form e. The many faces of expatriate identity. Cultural intelligence CQ is a relatively new construct to academia that has recently gained increasing attention. Its relevance in a multicultural context like South Africa is apparent since cultural interaction between different ethnic groups is unavoidable. Research purpose: The objective of this research is to determine the relationship between personality, identity and CQ amongst young Afrikaans-speaking South Africans.

Research approach, design and method: A quantitative research design was used in this study. This study was cross-sectional in nature. Main findings: Religious identity and ethnic identity have a relationship with cognitive CQ. Soft-heartedness and conscientiousness have a relationship with behavioural CQ. Also, soft-heartedness, facilitating, extroversion and religious identity have a relationship with motivational CQ.

Organisations within South Africa will gain a better understanding of CQ and the benefits of having a culturally intelligent workforce as a strengths-based approach.
