The juxtaposition of the cows grazing on the rolling green hills with the ocean background was lovely and bucolic. The elephant seals on the beach were fun to see. The rocky cliff overlooks were gorgeous and dramatic. From there we headed to the Lighthouse. I knew it was closed, but thought we could still walk down to it, just not go inside. Unfortunately, the stairs were gated closed at the top. It was still a pretty view and we got good pics of the lighthouse. We even caught a glimpse of a grey whale close to the cliffs, which was exciting.
We came back to the city via a much less winding road, and it was much better for car sickness. Our hotel Cow Hollow Motor Inn had free parking for our rental, which was so nice! Reyes were both beautiful. But if you live in Washington or Oregon , your bar for dramatic is automatically set pretty high. It's still absolutely lovely, but less impressive. I remember Muir as being absolutely magical while visiting 16 yrs ago from Alabama.
This time was much less so after being desensitized by the beauty of WA 11yr old: If you haven't seen this kind of scenery before, absolutely go- it's gorgeous. But if you have, maybe consider something close. If I had to do it again, we would just have crossed over into the Marin Headlands area, and done the Tennessee Valley Trail ending at the beach, and maybe explored Battery Spencer to search out the hot Instagram spots for my teen, like the one on top of the hill looking down over the Golden Gate, and the rope swing with the GG in the background at Kirby Cove she would have especially loved that.
Overall, we had a good day, but would have enjoyed it more staying closer. Wednesday- This was our last day. Doubtfire" house. This was a "must do" for us, since it's where my husband and I went for a meal 16 yrs ago after our wedding at the Palace of Fine Arts. It was definitely pricey which we expected from looking up a menu , but absolutely delicious food and a gorgeous view. We peeked into the Camera Obscura , which was neat, and had time to walk next door for a good look at the Sutro Baths, which I would highly recommend visiting.
We didn't have time to explore them, as it was My daughter really wanted to go over to the Embarcadero area to see the Cupid's Span sculpture, but we were too nervous about the time. In reality, we would have easily made it and could have hung around town an hour longer. We were lucky with very little traffic and and easy drive to the airport. Simple to return our rental car and catch the Air Train right over to the terminals.
