Virgin Media use Fibre to the Node FTTN which involves running fibre to a street-side cabinet and then a connection is made to the house using a coaxial cable. This coaxial cable offers more resilience to interference than a standard copper phone line so it is possible to attain faster broadband speeds over this. Currently Openreach, which is a subsidiary of BT, owns and services all the exchanges and connected infrastructure in the UK.
