In excess of 30 companies were brewing beer in Burton by the second half of the 19th century. Visit the Brewery Museum. A walk up through Tutubury to see Tutbury Castle and see the old Georgian houses and rural scenery. Good place to eat taxi journey to Swadlincote and the Pipe Works Prezzo was excellent. Very disappointed that the restaurant was closed. We were made aware that this was because staff were catering for a group of apprentices from a local factory.
If we had been made aware of this when we booked we would not have booked there. Staff lied about why the restaurant was closed, which was also annoying. Not really a tourist town. No museum or art gallery other than national brewing museum 10 Pounds. Lots of supermarkets in centre, and pubs and fast food outlets. Traffic was busy locally but moved freely. There are lots of busy roundabouts and speed cameras - so be prepared!
As this was a memory lane trip,for me it was mixed feelings,but it is a really industrious town,the new Marina at Barton is a must visit, and both the Marstons Brewery tour,and especially the Burton Brewery Museum tour were well worth a visit. There are some nice parks and open spaces but as being a little older than the family visitors we didn't really check out any family activities.
When you travel around Burton you get a feel for what was once an important brewery town. Remnants of the former brewery are still to be seen including a fine museum which includes photographs and horse-drawn carts which delivered the barrels of beer to a variety of consumers. Knowing this town for almost 60 years, however, some of its uniqueness has disappeared since the US beer company moved in three decades ago. Location is very centralized with Asda and Tesco within walking distance.
Place is clean, comfortable and host very accomodating.
Apartment has fridge, freezer, stove top, toaster, electric kettle, and clothes washer which made it extremly convenient. Parking may be tight as spaces are small. Parking is in an unsheltered area, but has coded gate, making it safe. Bed comfortable.
Room clean but small. Had air conditioning which worked well and meant window didn't need to be open, as beer garden below.. Breakfast first morning good. In a very nice location, with walk along river easily accessible and an area being planted with trees. Nothing to like had to make a formal complaint which the hotel group have so far chosen to ignore. The service is great!
