He tried hard to stop, but the sled flipped from under him. He had DS2 with him and managed to lift him up in the air when they came off. DH had some pretty good concrete burns on his arm. DS2 had a smaller one. He was done for that trip, but was okay with going again this year although we did other things instead. Kris Mom to: Join Date Nov Posts I feel like I would be remiss if I didn't send a warning on these slides.
I witnessed an injury on one that was very severe and life-changing. You have to really supervise. A sled stopped before the end and the child on the sled behind the stopped child ran into the stopped child.
They send subsequent sleds before the one in front has completed the run. Please be careful. Originally Posted by newnana. I've skiied all over the Midwest and in the Rockies , and one of the best things about skiing, to me, is the scenery. Most Midwestern resorts have little scenery to offer, but Chestnut's view of the Mississippi is gorgeous, and provides a pretty backdrop to some decent downhill runs. For beginners, the area has a lot to offer, and my kids happily skiied Rookie Ridge and Old Main all weekend.
The only issue I have with these runs is they get a bit crowded on weekends, and some skiiers and boarders go too fast down Old Main despite the sign warning it's a slow ski area. Old Main is a great slope for my kids, both of whom are what I'd call "advanced beginners," meaning they know the basics, feel comfortable on skis and are ready for longer runs. It's a very pretty run, surrounded by trees and rock formations, with the river at the bottom.
It takes my boys about five minutes to get down, which is good for a Midwest area, where a lot of places only have hills you get down in 30 seconds to a minute. It's long enough that you don't feel like you're constantly on the chair lift.
For me, as an advanced skiier, there are a few steep runs that provide some real speed and exhilaration. Warpath, Eagle and Mine Shaft are as steep as a lot of runs out West; the difference is, they're over kind of fast. But they're as steep as anything I've skiied in the Midwest, and if you take Eagle to Mine Shaft, you drop about feet on almost all expert terrain.
Not bad for a ski resort in Illinois. We had a great experience with the ski school.
Nick was my kids' instructor and both of them liked him and learned a lot. Amenities are relatively good.
The food at the cafeteria is pretty crummy, but if you go upstairs to the sit-down restaurant the food is quite good. I'm hard to please but I was pretty impressed. We didn't rent equipment this time but have in the past and it's usually an efficient process. Another benefit of skiing at Chestnut is its accessibility to the town of Galena, which is full of quaint 19th-century architecture, decent hotel options and good restaurants. The entire region is extremely pretty, with rolling hills and river views.
