This madness needs to be stopped! You can go to the photo department of Walmart or Sears or something. I'm pretty sure they carry every colour of gowns and caps. However, why did then all the students receive the email from their university registrar office telling them to book grad photo session at University of Toronto saying " You must have your photograph taken if you wish to appear in the June Graduating Class composite.
So what's the point then? I doubt we are going to be receiving class composite for free. If I knew that before I would not take a picture at all.

Grad photos are always a rip-off. I'm not surprised in the least by this.

They're not going to change their prices. You could maybe ask them for a breakdown of the cost to see how they attempt to justify it. I agree that it's highway robbery but I don't think anything's going to change. I suppose that for the digital copy, they expect people to use it to print out photos themselves, so they're making up for that lost revenue. I assume the "logic" behind it is that you are not buying just the photo, but you are buying the rights to reprint and use the digital image in any way, forever.
And for that, they can charge whatever ppl are willing to pay. I just hope that whoever buys a digital print doesn't end up getting a 72dpi jpeg. Not sure why people don't buy the prints, then scan it themselves and instead insist on purchasing the digital copy. There is a difference in quality and size between 4 MB digital photo and scanning 5 x 7 inches print photo. But you do have a good point!

Should check with the studio before receiving low quality photos. I just bought photos for grad as well from Lassman from my college. You should be able to see your grad photos online and choose a package or choose to buy individual ones as well. I didn't receive any email from them besides letting me know my photos were uploaded to their website for viewing. I see what package you mean.
It still wasn't 'cheap' but better than buying those packages and getting wallet sized photos. Assholes are a rip off and I didn't buy anything from them. They will take more pictures of you the day of graduation with your actual degree right after you receive it. You will be offered to buy those also at an expensive price. That's what I did. Uh, in this day and age there's no excuse for accepting "paymeny" through email or phone. Its pretty much how much professional photographers charge. You are paying for their expertise, not the cost of the material.
They do this as a profession.

Professional photography is very expensive. Its not a steady job where you get paid by the hour for working 8 hours a day. Taylor Studios graduate portraits will not be included in the Tricolour yearbook. When should I arrive for my appointment? Please be at the studio at least 10 minutes before your appointment so you have time to prepare. What should I do when I arrive?
Check in at the reception desk so that you can pay for your sitting. We will then supply you with further information regarding viewing and purchasing your portraits online. We have a washroom and closet if you wish to hang up your coat. We also request that you remove any wet footwear before entering the studio so we can keep our spaces clean. Can my friends pose with me at the end of my shoot? The Standard Sitting allows time for one 1 friend for a few poses.
