The front seats add to its premium feel with loads of support and unexpected levels of comfort. The second row is equally comfortable with plenty of leg room and the ability to slide forward and backward. And if you need room to haul cargo, there's up to 42 cubic feet with the third row folded and 83 cubes with both rear rows folded.
While the inside looks great and is very inviting, the exterior is the victim of over-styling. The Highlander is a great option for buyers looking for nothing but a comfortable cabin with plenty of room. Buyers with a large family will find its third row very tight and not built to haul anyone for an extended time.
This is especially true once you move up the trim levels and pile on premium features. But there are a few must-avoid bits, including its standard engine and staring at its front end for too long. Updated on Sep 17, I love my Toyota Highlander, the look is very sophisticated, and it's roomy inside.
It's an eight seater , very comfortable and reliable. And I love the feeling every time I drive. The only thing I don't like is the interior of my Highlander, it's black and beige, I would rather it be all black, beige gets dirty so fast since I have four kids. Other than that, it's a wonderful car. I love my Highlander, looks great when I drive.
Do everything with it, drive kids to school and work, and drive long distance. Save a lot of money on gas.
Trunk is big, fits everything. The only thing I'm a little disappointed is the interior of the car, beige color kind of gets dirty so fast since I have four kids, but other than that, I love everything about it. My new vehicle is the best investment I ever made. It makes me feeling wonderful every times I just get in my car and drive off. It's worth every penny. I feel very comfortable and safe while driving my children around. I bought the XLE trim, which had all the options I wanted, but I was very disappointed with the sound system.
I would have had to go up a trim level to get the JBL system, but that came with additional options that I didn't want or need e. My previous SUV had a wonderful Bose system, so the Highlander's radio system is a great disappointment. These two issues keep my my Highlander from being perfect. It's hard to believe that such a nice vehicle with the Limited Edition trim did not have this feature. I was also surprised and disappointed that the Highlander Limited did not include remote start or rain-sensing wipers.
These are features that absolutely should be included on an expensive vehicle, especially on the Limited Edition trim option. The sunglasses holder does not hold the large-frame sunglasses that are popular today, and my glasses have gotten stuck several times, to the point where I can't use the holder. I also would like to have the option to unlock the rear hatch without unlocking the entire car. Updated on Feb 5, It's a good compromise for handling , fuel economy , and occasional towing forget fuel economy in that situation. I bought a factory glass breakage sensor.
Why didn't the alarm go off when a window was broken during a burglary? The Tire Pressure Monitoring System shows low air pressure every time the temperature drops. Had same problem with Highlander Sport 4wd, had expected that issue to be resolved in Highlander Limited awd! Nav system maps outdated. I only use the vehicle's system for intercity routing on major highways, which don't change as rapidly as suburban streets, where I do most driving. Updated on Mar 21, Two things I think can be improved regarding the navigation system.
I think when there is a passenger they should have access to all controls in the navigation system. If the technology is there to identify when a passenger is in the seat for the air bag there should be technology to allow complete access to the navigation system when the vehicle has a passenger. I also wish the navigation system had a "mute" button on the main navigation screen so it can be muted for brief periods if someone wishes to do so in certain circumstances. I really like that the rear seats lay mostly flat. This was a big selling point for me.
Updated on Apr 8, The first issue I have with this car is that the cargo area is not as large as I would like.
Also, I owned a Highlander Limited and it had significantly more initial power than this Highlander. When I step on the gas in a need to pass or go faster, there is a hesitation as if it might stall before it gets going. The luxury features are nice and I really like the stereo system , but I believe more could have been done to increase the gas mileage between the and Highlander. The inside cargo space of my new Highlander is a disappointment. The back needs to be 48 inches wide to fit two large dog crates. Toyota would get more dog buyers if it provided this space.
Dog show people are buying this vehicle rather than the Highlander. Updated on Oct 9, It takes a while to become accustomed to using the Toyota Synergy Drive to get this mileage , but it is well worth the adjustment. The vehicle is responsive, handles very well, and is versatile in its seating and cargo accommodations. It is also reliable and has outstanding initial quality, as well as continued quality in all aspects of workmanship.
That I have owned more than one Toyota Highlander and that my spouse also has the same model different year says it all. Updated on Oct 10, The most reliable , practical SUV that meets my needs for cargo and passenger capacity. An excellent choice—every time I drive it, I learn a new capability or feature that I was unaware that it had. More info in the owners manual on how the AWD system works, including the display of torque to the four wheels in the driver's info screen would be useful. I changed from my Mazda CX-9 only because of the lack of Mazda dealerships around the country. It was an incredible car.
In truth, it handled much better than the Highlander, it braked far far better than the Highlander. Acceleration is similar, the Highlander is quieter and maybe a little more comfortable than the CX Access into the Mazda CX-9 was much easier for me at 5'8 than into the Highlander, which is higher off the ground at the seat level.
Starting the Highlander is much more unforgiving re the sequence of brake then button than was the Mazda. I would have a new Mazda in a heartbeat if only they had a better dealer network. That car had zero issues in seven years and 60, miles, and drove like it was a sports sedan. Toyota has a ways to go to capture the secure feeling the CX9 exhibits on interstate "flyovers" and emergency situations. The brakes on the Mazda felt so much safer than in this new Highlander. I do miss it, but I like this car and the close by dealer. I love my new vehicle. My critiques are: Bothersome 2 Line of sight is impeded by the left and right corners of the windshield body of car between windshield and door 3 Touch panels on the screen are way too sensitive.
Good Things: Looks like it will break easily. The navigation system is tough to figure out.
Still don't know how to work it right. The headrests should be adjustable front to back, so it won't be uncomfortable when I have clips or my hair is in a ponytail.
The seats are too firm!!! I am hoping they will soften up over time. You could have an inflatable seat to soften the ride. Lastly, I think my back speakers rattle a little when the volume is up on my radio. My premium system should not rattle. Updated on Nov 18, An outstanding vehicle Highly recommend! Biggest drawback is the NAV system and interface. I've owned the Highlander Limited for over 6 months and still haven't set it up. It may make me feel better about the NAV system. You almost lost a sale to Honda because you do not provide the Apple interface. And the voice activated NAV system is extremely frustrating to use Artificial Intelligence driven.
Having the system teach the person how to talk to it is NOT the right approach. It ruins an otherwise excellent purchase. All interfaces should be intuitive. No one wants the system to direct how you speak to it. I wish the keyless entry system was available on the rear doors of the car instead of just the front doors.
My previous vehicle Avalon Limited had this on all doors. Also, I wish the Toyota Entune sound system had a way to display and play playlists and folders when using a USB thumb drive. Rear tailgate should have a sensor to stop when seeing an obstacle. Little kids could be injured due to lack of this feature and this is a safety concern.
Please work on this. The lock feature for the keyless entry. It only unlocks the drivers door when I drive and I have to unlock the others. But if I enter the passenger side, it unlocks all four. It should always unlock all four. Also, I don't like that I can't lock my keys in the car. Helpful when I'm hiking or doing things. Some sort of code to get in would be better.
I can only turn it on using the 'AUTO" button. There should be an "ON" button as well as an "auto" so I have the option. Updated on Aug 29, The third row seats do not fold down flat or can be removed. Need to redesign the rear third row seats. When folded in the down position, the rear third row seats do not lie flat. They are slanted towards the rear door. Can the rear third row seats be redesigned to lie flat or taken out of the vehicle?
It really bugs me when I look in my drivers side mirror and the door trim that connects to the window is not seamless from the drivers door to the passengers door. It almost looks warped or broken. I went back to the dealership and all the cars are like that.
