It also has the advantage of using or volt supply depending on your electrical situation. Great welder and yes you can run gas with it also. I am running a CO2 mix gas you can get from any of your local welding supply shops.
I grew up on stick welding also, and I love this welder! Hey TJ, Yep, this welder can use either a wire wrapped in flux no gas or a plain steel wire gas tank required. The mvp welder the best!! Small enough to carry around. This one can use flux core or ones that don't have flux.. It's a great welder. How many amps Needed to run the welder on v? Rustin W on Dec 16, Reply Inaccurate seth c on Dec 16, Purchased on Jan 21, I have mine plugged into the standard 50 amp welding plug and it works great.
It might run on less but not sure.
Recommended is a 35 amp breaker. Went with a 40 as they are easier tocome by. The outlet I use only for my welder is a 30 amp. I used a 30amp breaker. A shopper on Jun 15, Yes, it will do flux or mig. Mine came setup for flux. But no flux nozzle is included. For mig welding, a simple swap of terminal connectors and a tank of gas is all it takes. Yes, you'll just need to change the polarity on the leads, and change wire to switch over.
Instructions are in the manual. Works well both ways depending on your needs. You have to reverse the polarity by switching two wires. It's very simple and explained by the literature. Yes, it will work with flux core wire or with gas. Just make sure you have the polarity right. Great unit! They can handle both flux and mig. Flux core wire or solid wire can be used with the mvp. I have the MVP and mine will do both. Yes, it will do both. Is this welder capable of welding aluminum as packaged or do I need to buy a different spool gun?
If I need a optional spool gun for aluminum welding, is there one available for this model? I have read that the Hobart wont weld aluminum without a spool gun, regardless there is no spool gun available for that model. Your responses are greatly appreciated. Mik B on Mar 5, You will need a spool gun ,that is not included. I have been using this welder steady for two years. Works great. I also believe you need a spool gun to weld effectively anything more than a small amount of aluminum. I have not used mine for that purpose, i have a TIG machine for that.
I show the spool runner gun should work for this welder. I am an old school welder. I got the biggest little mug the I use generator. I do steel and stainless. Gas and shield. I got Miller bobcat gas drive also. Welder is not capable outta the box does need spool gun. Yes they do sell a spool gun that is compatible and yes the is not capable of aluminum. The unit is capable of welding aluminum however it requires an optional spool gun accessory not included with the original unit.
It will not weld aluminum as packaged. Spool gun spool runner can be used to weld aluminum with this welder. I don't think so. In my experience you need to spool gun. Dave R on Jul 1, The welder comes with two electrical plugs, one for v and one for v. All you have to do is change out the plug and make sure the welder is set for the associated v or v settings on the front panel.
Its very simple. There are 2 different plug adapters. The power cable from the welder has a twist lock connector that plugs into either of the 2 provided adapters. Real easy, great design, easy to go from to Takes a few seconds. Just change the plug over. Unscrew the plug line up the arrows on the plug the machine automatically switches to once the plug is changed.

I use Weldcote wire without a single problem. Burn up the supplied wire testing it and learning your machines settings then go buy good supplies. Dale J on Mar 30, Not sure what you mean by "stick into the cable liner". I've had this welder for a couple years and it works flawlessly for me so far. If you mean the wire melts to the tip you might be using too much heat or not enough gas Also if the wire spool is chipped cracked etc. The wire can dig in and spiderived Web like a bad fishing reel. Reply 1 Dale J on Mar 30, Maybe remove and inspect the liner? Try holding a little more clearance between your material and the tip.
Have you tried adjusting the tension knob on the wire spool? Yes I have, not to the point of spider webbing, it sticks into the liner I think. My next thing is to change the liner but it shouldn't be bad under one month old and only a few hours of welding. Reply Dale J on Mar 30, What do you need to do to get it unstuck? I move the handle from side to side with out moving the cable and it pops a little and then I can weld again. Reply Dale J on Apr 2, What is the welding capacity in v?
Maybe the better question is How much fusion can you get with v? The more Amps, the more fusion. The more fusion, the thicker the material. You want to be careful to not have too many Amps either. Only used it once on v before I had installed my v outlet. I am very pleased with the Handler mvp! I love my handler, no much spatter, the welds are very clean!
A shopper on Jan 26, I've gotten the best results when I've used argon gas and the optional Spool Runner I've also found it is very important to clean off the aluminum oxide that forms on the surface quickly with a good wire brush and then weld right away. I haven't tried welding sheet aluminum yet, only angle, plate and rod. However, I prefer TIG for welding aluminum to create structural parts. Personal preference, I feel I have better control.
You need the spool gun that is specifically for aluminum, sold separately. Yes, you only need to get a spool gun and a bottle of argon gas. Can the Hobart handler MVP operate on generator power? I would say yes as long as your generator's output is v and the amperage you need for the weld job. Yes you can, I do it with mine all the time No problems with it at all. Yes I having only used mine on so far. How much for mig gun lead and liner,? A shopper on Mar 3, I am narrowing down to which welder to buy, I have had this welder and your site as a bookmark and was about to purchase.
I was wondering if free shipping and the reduced price were going to be available again on this welder? Also it seems a promo code I found online was not accepted on this welder either. Thank you in advance. Reply Inaccurate Ben B on Nov 1, Please see the link below. We do not know when our free shipping will be offered on certain welder ahead of time or sale prices.
We do have coupon section at the bottom of our web page. Sorry for this inconvenience. What kind of wire comes with it and can you run. A shopper on Apr 27, Welder came with a. Unit can use. It comes with flux core. If you have to ask, trust me an aluminum boat is not the place to learn! Likely the thinnest aluminum MIG wire you can find though..
Check the spool cover settings on the machine. Reply 1 dale h on Aug 16, What gas would you guys recommend for this unit for outside welding? Let usage. Terry C on May 1, Even on none windy days just trying to get a cleaner weld Reply 1 Terry C on May 2, Ok thanks Reply Terry C on May 2, Dose this welder have a pulse feature? A shopper on Jan 9, No it does not. Pulse mig welding is not even recognized as a type of weld by welding societies and is difficult to do compared to tig pulse. I've found mig stitch voltage on-off easier compared to some processor modulating it.
There are mig pulse welders out there but they are several times more expensive than this versatile hobby welder. Will this weld Exhaust pipe? A shopper on May 27, I highly suggest you get some scrap pipe and perfect your settings before welding the actual exhaust.
You could use flux core wire if you have to but I would use gas shielding if you can. Also be sure and get a spool of the proper wire for the pipe being welded. A good welding supply shop or muffler shop should be able to tell you the correct wire. All day long. I have welded it both on v and v.
It can handle some of the thinnest metal around. Can this machine tig weld aluminum A shopper on Apr 17, No TIG capability. It will MIG weld aluminum with the optional spool gun. Questions For Similar Products. Customer Reviews.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Kerinsy from hobart mvp Great welder for beginner or pro. Very easy to use and set up. Date published: Rated 5 out of 5 by Ifirefight from More than enough power Bought this mainly to build a roof for my Polaris. However, I have plenty of other plans for it. I did autobody for 20 years. I learned to weld on an old Millermatic. You could weld an army tank with that old welder. I was looking at the Miller and this Hobart. I decided on the Hobart and am glad I did. This welder is supposed to be a portable welder, meaning you can take it with you to the job sight.
This thing is heavy and I knew that going in. If you plan on using it to take with you, then I would not recommend this welder. It lays down a nice bead. Im in the learning process yet. Done several small welds but nothing of any measure. I've heard the HH is a good unit, I've also heard the same about the HH which seem to have a cult like following. The HH is a better welder than the More power and 7-position voltage switch as opposed to 5. Join Date Jun Location northern cal. Posts If I needed another compact machine I would buy a mvp again.
I feel an actual "Hobart factory" reconditioned one might be better than new. It has gone through extensive troubleshooting and an actual weld test. The "recondition" job by those folks on tools seems to just be a clean up, maybe use some spray paint, plug them in for a quick test, then post them up for sale. I don't know what prices are for a refurb unit, but Farm and Fleet have some super sale prices on new ones. Had all accessories that a brand new one comes with. Originally Posted by deafman. Stuff that goes through retail gets touched by people who haven't a clue. So, many issues may just be newbies dealing with a wire feed welder. MIG welding is "easy" but a wire feeder is more complicated to set up and run than a stick welder. And people get cold feet and just return a unit. Not like a lawn mower that some guy forgets to put oil in. Good info, thanks. To answer your o.
