The beeps were overcooked and tough--no way they were cooked to order in that time frame--they lie! Few mins later, out come the poorest imitation of clams oreganata I have yet experienced and I am a retiree--been around awhile. Remember, I'm being literal.
Good food but don't look for "atmosphere". Again, we arr'd before 5PM. The Belmont offers a large range of food options from pub classics like steak sandwiches to slow roasted lamb shanks and pork rib eyes. Oh what a juke box! There are so many Italian restaurants that are so much better and more reasonable. My Chicken Savoy was good but came with no sides - just an escarole salad which they served family style before the meal.
There was no chopped bell pepper or bacon The pasta arrived on the heels or the appetizers along with my daughter-in-law's soda. My son had to ask our "waitress" again where his wife's drink was and she gave him a dirty look in-lieu of an apology. A word on the drinks. The Yeungling's were ice cold but served in the bottles. Not only didn't they give us a beer glass but she didn't even ask if we wanted one. My wife ordered wine. The "waitress" asked her "red or white"?
My wife chose red and the results was "plonk" of the worst kind. I am guessing they have a four-liter bottle of the stuff behind the bar along with one of the white. I assure you, again, I'm being literal. Well now, here comes the famous, much-praised Chicken Savoy The famous sauce tasted only of vinegar. The Chicken Murphy portion even smaller but this for one. It had more flavor then the Famous but was equally dry and overcookedhow could they over cook if it was cooked to order, you ask??? My daughter-in-law's Pork Francese arrived when the rest of dinner nearly done.
We called to the "waitress" but she ignored us.
When it finally arrived, daughter-in-law shocked to find it tasted good!! She gave us all some only fair since she helped us eat ours while she waited. This was the highlight of the dining experience I'd rate it a three. It arrived hot I'm guessing this WAS cooked to order. We asked for the check not drinking coffee from those dirty-looking pots and had it thrown--literally--on the table by "waitress" who didn't even stop to hand it to us. If Tripadvisor would allow "0" stars, I would give it. Better yet, if I could turn back the clock, I would have gone to our neighborhood pizza place and gotten a better, cheaper meal served by a smiling waitress who was brought up with some manners.
I'm serious when I say the place did not appear clean. One of the plates "waitress" gave us was definitely dirty.
She said it was nothing and proceeded to wipe it off with her bare hand I kid you not!! Zero atmosphere, shabby decor, abrupt service; but you don't go to Stretch's as locals call it for any of those - you go for the chicken savoy, which for some mysterious reason is head and shoulders above everyone else's. My wife has been trying to copy the recipe for years.
Add cavatelli with pot cheese and an order of shrimp "beeps", and you've got a comfort dinner for the ages. A little out of the way, but worth the effort. Ok, went there on a friends suggestion for my birthday. Looked at the menu ahead of time and was excited to go. Went on a Saturday night, early, because I was told it gets packed.
Sat right down. Old school inside, which is fine. Ordered the shrimp beebs, ziti and pot cheese, and the chicken savoy.
Portions of all were small for the price. Chicken savoy was dried out with no taste, shrimp beebs had an chlorine after taste, and I definitely make the so called ziti and pot cheese a hundred times better. Big disappointment!!. I cannot understand why people rave about this place. There are so many Italian restaurants that are so much better and more reasonable. Old school Italian, family style seating and serving. Food quality, portion size and value are all excellent.
Menu was a tad challenging as there aren't descriptions but we had no problem getting assistance from our dining neighbors. The added benefit from getting their advice was they had extensive knowledge of the menu. We ordered shrimp, chicken, pasta and eggplant dishes and ate until we could not eat any more.
The pasta, shrimp "beeps" and chicken savoy were favorites.
As an observer dining on a Monday night, it was obvious that this place is a favorite amongst the locals as the place was busier than most. One thing to note for those visiting from out of town, this is a cash only establishment but prices are reasonable. Definitely would visit again on my next trip to Jersey. A great place for a quick dinner, not fancy, our go to order is Shrimp Beeps, Pasta with long hot peppers olive and garlic, pork franciase, the best pork francaise you will ever have!
