Audience figures suggest so, for despite a worldwide background of plummeting four-wheeled motorsport attendances, this year's Festival attracted a record , people, dramatically more than the British Grand Prix the following weekend, while pre-bookings for the sixth Revival this weekend are up more than 20 per cent; more than 80, are expected at the period-dressed spectacular. The Festival has thus become possibly Britain's biggest annual sporting event and the Revival could in turn become the country's best-attended motor race; only World Superbike Championship meetings do better.
So how can these old-car events in the heart of rural West Sussex so buck the trend? Richard Sutton, Goodwood's year-old motorsport director, began assisting the Earl of March and his tiny core organising staff in Crucially, perhaps, they don't see themselves purely as motorsport promoters. That's only part of Goodwood, which is more famous perhaps for its horse racing than its automotive heritage.
As Sutton says: Our philosophy is simple. If visitors aren't amazed by what they see, and if they aren't experiencing something they won't find elsewhere, then we've failed.

The place is absolutely authentic. While in a sense Lord March provides a playground for the well-off, we are also dedicated to environmental sustainability.

Goodwood's organic farms will soon be among the largest in the South of England. When the new Rolls-Royce factory was built at Goodwood last year, Sir Nicholas Grimshaw's shrub-covered roof was designed to merge visually into the surrounding countryside.
For the same reasons, the annual Festival is built from scratch each year on an unblemished, greenfield site. Virtually the entire infrastructure has to be brought in. Competition between major event organisers for the same hardware is intense. We have to book more than 1, local hotel rooms, to ensure our guests are accommodated properly. A complicating factor for Festival organisation is the ever-growing exhibition interest shown by big corporate sponsors.
No other event in the world can do that. And many of the motor industry glitterati attend. Because of Charles March's ability to throw an outstanding party, it's also one of the few places in the world at which the boards of major companies can meet one another and relax. Both the Festival and Revival have become renowned for business-to-business networking without the pressure, boredom and vile costs inflicted by traditional motor shows.
I think their current role is deeply questionable, at least when the costs are considered. How good a cross-section of the world's supercars can you see at a modern motor show compared with what was displayed at July's Festival? And the paying public could see, touch, hear and watch them perform — all impossible at a traditional motor show.
So is his the best job in motorsport? The fun comes from trying continuously to push the boundaries and improve on what we've done before. You can always try harder, be more creative, make that extra call or write that extra letter, but there's only so many hours in the day.
For my first three years, I used to get into the office at about 5am and leave 15 hours later. And because Charles March tended to work very late indeed, I'd occasionally arrive before he'd gone to bed. It was genuinely a hour operation — slightly insane, actually.
Thankfully we've got a bit more civilised these days, but the commitment remains major. Charles March has often been approached by organisations wanting to recreate his events elsewhere, but fundamental to the Goodwood brand's success are the estate staff. They care about this place and how it's perceived — and that's why their friendliness is so often remarked upon. It's something you could never reproduce using outside contractors.
