Declare freebies or face jail

18 people have died in the Macomb County Jail since 2012. This is one woman's story.

If, however, they aren't able to pay because of medical issues or other problems, why would you put them in jail? One thing people are finding once they've been put in jail is that their bail payment is set at the exact same amount of their debt owed. When they post bail their money goes directly to the debt collector. This policy was adopted four years ago in response to the high volume of debtor default cases, say court officials. Some judges say the practice distorts the purpose of bail, which is to make sure people show up in court.

If friends or family post a debtor's bail, they can expect to kiss the money goodbye, because it often ends up with creditors, who routinely ask judges for the bail payment.

This does seem to be a bit shady — basically the law enforcement and judicial systems are being used as an extension of the debt collection agencies. I'm sure the debt collectors will abuse this system since they've never been known for their fair debt collection practices.

The thing is not to stop payment all together. The story about the mother that had the C-section is just sickening! YES — You should pay debt But to be thrown in jail is ridiculous. Jails are already over crowded 3. That will cost MORE money by sustaining someone in jail 4.

The fact is when you loan money to someone there is RISK. That is one of the major reasons for charging interest. It not right…but it does happen. The methods should continue to be money based: But to use the already overtaxed law enforcement agency as an extension of debt collectors is reprehensible! They stick their heads in the sand and hope it just goes away. The best thing a person in debt can do is reach out to their creditors and find a way to work with them.

I cannot afford an attorney, and am waiting for a call back from legal aid. Would that delay proceedings? Allowing a Defendant to blow off Court with no consequences is not only disrespect of the law, but leaves the Plaintiff with no option whatsoever.

The biggest fear of being put in prison for a debt not paid, is being raped or killed! I would rather kill myself. I got carried away and I used bad judgement. I asked the bill collectors if there was a chance that we could split up the payments. I was told, no. I wish there were a way to take care of this, but I guess not.

Both Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz are in the high security Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.

There is hope. The constitution of the US has obolished debtors prisons. However, the governmetn and the court systems use several tactics to get around the constitution. For example, if you owe taxes and are unable to pay them, you owe a debt to the IRS. When you do not pay or are unable to pay, they will put you in jail under a term called tax evasion.

The Sunshine rule is based on a American initiative that threatened to prosecute or fire staff involved in bribery. In our small charity, if gifts are made to staff they must put the money into the pot as a donation and share sweets and such with other staff. No staff member is allowed to accept a personal gift of any nature, in case professional boundaries become blurred.

The same should be the case in the medical profession, where any such 'bribes' are paid into a communal pot for donation to charity, or use for client benefit. There should be no excuse for any 'fat cat' to accept money or incentives from drugs companies. This could lead to drugs being prescribed to patients for entirely the wrong reasons. The regulation should be enforced and strictly monitored. Anyone caught in contravention of this rule should be subject to disciplinary action. Whilst I fully support this action, surely it should be extended to all Procurement and not just Pharmaceuticals?

Particularly big ticket items in Capital Spend programmes. I work in Procurement and we will not accept a cup of coffee! Quite rightly so.
