There are a number of reviews providing detailed cross sectional analysis with page references trying to spot minor inconsistencies in this book - whilst totally missing the point. The rawness of the book is part of the appeal, it isn't a work that the late Professor Hawking had the opportunity to craft, to shape into a consistent narrative.

It's his final project which was put together for him after he died. It is a wonderful collection of thoughts from one of the greatest minds of our age. One really nice thing about the book is that it is so neatly broken down into sections. This means that, unlike a Brief History of Time you can actually dip in and out of this book. It is accessible, thought provoking and a fitting final works from the great man. The price offers exceptional value, and is something everyone should try to make an effort to read. Who's idea was it to get Eddie Redmayne to write the Foreword?

If I'd known who wrote the Foreword before I purchased the book I wouldn't have bothered. Still, if you tear those pages out of the book it becomes a collector's item. You may well find yourself having to read some of the chapters over several times - that's not a bad thing but it is a time consuming thing. If Stephen's family decide to release anything else just drop the B Actor with too much to say and nothing worth listening to next time.

The most interesting chapters for me were the purely scientific ones; on Black Holes and time travel.

However, I was disappointed that, on page 93, Hawking explains the Uncertainty Principle incorrectly. He describes it as the impossibility of measuring the position of a particle e. This is true but it is not the Uncertainty Principle which says that a sub-atomic particle does not have a precisely defined position and momentum due to its wave-nature. As other reviewers have noted, there is quite a lot of repetition; the last two chapters could have usefully been edited into one.

If we had the collective will, we could have eliminated poverty already. AI is not likely to improve our willingness to co-operate as one world.

Answering the 3 most common Amazon questions I get..

Hawking is very keen on us colonising other planets in order to preserve the human race; but is it morally right, having stripped the Earth of resources and polluted it, to do the same to other worlds? Then there is the God question. Second, it means the theories and equations by which scientists describe the orderly way in which these ingredients of the universe interact.

In the second case the Laws exist in the minds of scientists.

Customer Questions & Answers

Hawking says that the energy balance of the universe is zero page 31f. The positive energy produced in the Big Bang is exactly balanced by the negative energy of space produced by gravity. His analogy for this is a man digging a hole to make a hill on a flat piece of land. One obvious flaw in this analogy is that an agent the man is required to carry out the process.

Questions and Answers about Amazon.com

What is the equivalent agent for starting off the universe? He had carers who got him up, washed him, fed him, toileted him and dressed him. I am disappointed that Lucy Hawking offers not a single word to thank or recognise these carers. I don't know how much of this book Stephen Hawking actually wrote but it is certainly different from his other books.

There is nothing new in this book that hasn't been written before by other authors. In fact anybody with a degree in physics would already know virtually everything that is discussed in this book.

Frequently bought together

I feel that this book is not anywhere near the level that Stephen himself has set with his other works. This book is just a money maker written by a ghost writer that has had very little input, if any, from Stephen Hawking. If there wasn't enough new material that was actually from Stephen then everything should have been left as it was.
