Though the store was open to everyone, UT students received a discount on everything they bought. The store grew so quickly that it moved from a tiny room on campus to a large storefront on campus. Students and faculty members both worked at the store and put back a portion of the money the shop made to help the community at large.
Some of the donations the store made went to the building of a new gym and other facilities on campus.
The University Co-op is now a nonprofit organization that donates money to the school in a number of different ways, including scholarships and financial aid programs that help students. It also grew beyond a single location on the flagship campus in Austin. There are now several University Co-op stores located across the state. It opened its website as a way to help UT fans around the world buy merchandise and memorabilia. The site now offers both domestic and international shipping options.
