I loved being able to move up through the company and try out different positions but the lack of training and support made the job highly stressful. The most enjoyable part of the job was being able to see all the new product as it came in and learn about all sorts of different crafts and techniques from our customers and team members.
Inconsistent workload, negative reinforcement from upper management, little to no useful and structured training, does not pay competitive rates. This was my first job. It may have changed within a couple years but Michaels was a great place to work. Management was stern but not overbearing. Gave us initiatives to collect more emails or whatever new task corporate wanted the locations to do.
Customers could be really interesting but overall the job taught me many skills that I have used later on. I was able to get raises in the short time I worked there. Typically they bring in external candidates or pile more work on different positions to avoid filling open positions. A good company to work for as a Part-Time Assistant.
A typical day is providing customer service and making sure store is clean. I have learned how to provide assistance when assisting with craft projects. The workplace culture is a very busy store. The hardest part of the job sometimes is being able to multi-task and provide assistance depending on how busy the store is. The most enjoyable part of the job is working with other employees who are very friendly and team players. Management provides free coffee and always providing food during certain times of year.
The company does not provide medical benefits to Part-Time Associates. Productive and fun workplace, but low compensation. The work is stress free, but challenging. The management is fantastic and the support from other coworkers is refreshing. The pay rate is not enough however and there is little chance for advancement within the company.
Good company with a lot of potential, and benefits. Only lacks high class supervision and respect for employes.
During my time at Michaels,I was always pleased with the pay and benefits. Causing better employees who work hard to work harder or getting in trouble for others mistakes That always seemed to cause frustration between employees, and make harder workers not work as hard. All in all the work was fairly easy but things were made more difficult due to management and other employees slack.
Good for part time or side job, not management career. A good job to have right out of high school for some extra money while going to college or as a part time job for a stay at home parent. I would not recommend anyone attempt to work as a manager of any kind for this company. The benefits and pay are below average and the workload is unrealistic.
Upper management was burnt out and lost motivation and inspiration in a short period of time. Management turn around was very high.
The benefits were okay. We would often have food available in the break room coworkers were great ,had fun when not busy. It was a stressful job, very hot, only fans, limited working space, pay was poor, but was required to work hard and fast, the raise that we did get was very low, even with the extreme work conditions. Not a great place to work long term. I have worked at Michaels for going on 6 years. I have barely received a raise and have been passed up for management 3 times, despite being a hardworking, well liked, employee.
The job is tiresome and the demands of corporate border on abuse.
A nice first job. Expectations for most positions in the store are pretty realistic. Holidays black friday-Christmas are VERY high volume, so be prepared to really be putting in work during those times. Otherwise, Michaels generally seems to look out for their employees and all of my experience with management has been relatively positive. My store was very growth-oriented if you worked for it and made your longterm goals clear. Be ready to see a lot of older ladies and also parents doing their kids school projects. I was part time and in school, the hours were extremely flexible.
You can block out your availability and they will almost always keep your schedule to those hours. The management left a lot to be desired, but the coworkers made it all worth it. When people told you about their projects you could just see the passion. You got to share crafting stories and really build a rapport with regulars. Overall a good work place. The management is very friendly but will not hesitate to get serious when it's time to be serious. The seasonal time is the most important time to be serious and competitive.
Fun experience and Friendly coworkers, not much room for advancement. The training was a little lackluster for a sales floor position, but all the coworkers and managers were friendly and willing to go over procedure when you need assistance. Most of the learning is on the job, but hours are flexible. If you have an unruly schedule, the managers are willing to work with you and asking for time off 2 weeks in advance usually allows leeway.
Most of the positions are part time on sales floor, cashiering, or stocking. The only full time positions left in the company on a retail level are the manager positions and a few framing positions. Framing is a great position if you want to focus on individual experience 30 min to 1 hr 30 min a customer on the counter and construction building the physical frames and fitting.
There's usually a lot of rotation in the company so if you keep the managers up to date and work hard, they'll offer switching you to a more fitting position.
Honestly, if you're not interested in a full time position and benefits, Michaels is a good place for part timers, like students or adults looking for an additional job. Hours are pretty scarce in early spring and summer, but the fall and winter months have a serious boon in hours. Review this company. Claimed Profile Review this company.
