I may make an exception and use an ATM near my home where I can go back next day and check with the bank. That sounds seriously odd. You need to be seriously more forceful if people " offer " to help. I had the exact same thing happen to me at joberg airport.
There are always scare stories regarding ATM machines in every country and the scammers are getting more and more sophisticated. So whilst we say this is not going to happen to us ,unfortunately it is becoming more and more prevalent. The message on the screen says there will be a charge do you wish to proceed. On checking my statement the amount was tiny in comparison to say Standard bank in a street location. Our staff may also remove posts that do not follow our posting guidelines, and we reserve the right to remove any post for any reason.

I only wish I read your post sooner! Given the situation was exactly the same, it's likely it's the same gang. After inserting my card into the ATM machine and typing in my pin, the card was returned stating invalid account. As I attempted to put the card in again all the activity happened around us. A women pushed over my daughter and held my hand with the card. First Sign of Big Trouble!
She actually grabbed my hand which held the card and pushed the card up into the machine - it happen so fast but I think she actually took it. I screamed at her to get away from me when another man pushed his way forward telling me to enter the pin number to get the card returned.
He then started pushing numbers on the screen and the lanugage changed. It made no sense so I continued to hit cancel the red button but could not understand the language on the screen. At this point other where surrounding us - it was all overwhelming and frustrating because I knew this was a scam. I frantically tried to cancel the transaction and in my stress, i did the worst thing possible. I entered my pin. Nothing happened so I shouted to call the police.
Another person shouted out to me "call my bank and cancel the card". It was heartbreaking because I'm well traveled and this all happened before my eyes in a matter of minutes. Looking back, at least 6 individuals were involved in the scam. Only wish I pulled out my Iphone and took pictures. I totally regret going to an ATM without a Bank Security Guard - not walking away when others came close to me, and my biggest regret was entering my pin number.
Please anyone reading this post - do not use ATM's in this town without a Bank Security guard and camera's. I want to do something about this gang. Planning on calling Standard Bank to file a complaint as I did not do so with the police. Also, will find out if there is anything my bank can do about the situation they have already credited back the funds.
