It made an appearance last in , before Joe decided to bring it back to help businesses and get people shopping local again after the recent heavy snow. The idea is so simple, but it is working. There are no losers here. We have to accept everything at face value when we put these deals online or say them on air. But so far there's been absolutely no quibbles or complaints. And people are saying they never realised it was so easy for their small business to get their name mentioned on RTE. As for his own favourite deals, he said he's keeping a close eye on the dog bandanas being sold by a year-old schoolgirl.
I didn't realise she was just a child and she was on air asking if she could take part in 'Fiver Friday'. She rang from school - I could hear the class in the background. She's selling dog bandanas. She's already stocked in four shops so she'll be fine. And there are loads of genuine bargains. The graveyard is visually stunning with Celtic designs appearing on many of the headstones. We purchased the tour ticket from the new visitors centre which seemed surreal in a graveyard!! Our tour at Ours was a big group, however Jade was perfectly capable of being heard and keeping us all entertained.
The tour gave us a good insight into modern Irish history. Our 12 year old was a bit dithery about entering the O'Connell crypt however he went in and then wondered why he was so worried! Look out for the shamrocks on the floor and the dog kennels at the entrance!! As this is a working graveyard there were about 3 funerals taking place whilst we were on our tour. One was a black horse drawn carriage with plumes which looked spectacular - not quite sure how the mourners felt about us having a tour though!
When I visited the glasnevin museum and cemetery my immediate impression was awe at the sheer size of it: Personally, I think that's an insanely low charge, but you'll probably end up spending enough in the cafe to compensate for it!
The food was amazing, and the building itself architecturely stunning. The museum was incredibly interesting even amusing a normally bored teenager , and the atmosphere in the basement floor was incredibly enticing.
My only complaint would be regarding the touch screen components that featured within the museum. Whilst the 1st floors equipment all seemed to be in working order, those in the basement were almost entirely unresponsive. It didn't ruin the day, but it was a little irritating. The list of famous faces included in the cemetery was huge, and I must say that I learnt a lot from the experience.
It was also incredibly moving to walk amongst the headstones of Michael Collins, Connie markievicz and eamon de valera, and see the names of thousands upon thousands of ordinary people side by side them. I can't stress enough how worth a visit glasnevin was, and whilst it might be slightly off the tourist trail, taking the time to get a bus or taxi out to the cemetery which is only around 5km from the city centre is a must for any historically conscious visitor to the amazing city.
