It is built for people capable of carrying 30 or 40 lbs for a period of time, I. My gripe is the seat should be softer foam not plastic it would be more comfortable.
This pack does not work well without the seat, the kid falls back and ends up loading the straps awkwardly. Without the seat it is more of a safety device allowing temporary hands free movement. I don't think this idea could be done better. This type of carrying probably isn't for every parent or every kid.
Back carrying is more stable with a lower center of gravity. I have a two-year-old and two Golden Retrievers who all love to walk, but it's tough when I know I'll be carrying at least one of them by the end of the end and still wrangling at least two others on leashes. I want to encourage their love of the outdoors, so I've been eyeballing this backpack for a while. Being able to carry her "up top" while keeping my hands free to handle leashes and still carry water, snacks, poop bags, etc, was a compelling idea.
I saw a lot of reviews from people saying they had a hard time adjusting it comfortably, but they were mostly from shorter folks and the taller people didn't seem to have the same complaints. Alas, at 6' and with a good 25 miles of Saddlebaby hiking under our belt, I just cannot seem to get this adjusted comfortably. My first complaint is the seat itself. According to the instructions it is supposed to be snug against the wearer's neck. I don't feel like I'm designed considerably different than most homo sapiens, but for some reason this saddle will only fit comfortably against my neck if I'm looking down at about a 45 degree angle.
If I'm looking forward, as I often do while walking in a forward direction, the hard ridge of the seat grinds directly into my spine. I can scoot the seat back a little to prevent this, but then it's uncomfortable for the kid because she ends of sitting off-kilter sitting toward the front of the saddle rather than in the sear and it very quickly starts hurting my back. Almost regardless of how I adjust it, the saddle ends up sitting right on the pressure points on my shoulders above my collar bones, which eventually results in giant muscle knots and raging headaches.
So, yeah - that's a bummer. This leads to my second major issue: I can't seem to adjust the straps in such a way that it actually hold the saddle and passenger in place. It depends heavily on the waist strap to keep everything in position, but there is nothing to hold the waist strap in position. For me it ends up sliding up until it catches on my rib cage, which isn't a super fun way to support a 30 pound rider. I am constantly re-positioning and tugging down on the straps to keep it from being actively painful. The backpack portion will bunch up so it looks like I'm wearing a wonderfully colorful snail shell, which is lovely, but for the life of me I can't get this to actually stay put and perform the function for which it was purchased.
I decided to try the backpack without the saddle to see if it would alleviate some of my discomfort and prevent the pack from shifting backwards. This did help on my end; it was far more comfortable and did tend to stay in position much better than with the saddle installed. It was not as comfortable for my daughter, however. The clips which secure the saddle to the backpack portion are directly behind her knees, but with the saddle in place it elevates her legs just enough so they aren't totally annoying to her.
Without the saddle, the buckle half on the backpack gets rubbed right into the back of her knees which results in her squirming a lot more which results in a lot more rubbing of the ankle straps on her little legs. After a few miles of extra squirming, it pretty well eliminates any extra comfort I had on my end as well. Both my backpack and hydration pack have the same chest and waist straps as the Saddlebaby and neither have a buckle right in her knee pits.
If I'm going to contend with something that doesn't do the job quite right, I may as well save a chunk of cash at the same time. Knowing what I know now, I'd absolutely just adapt one of my existing packs. But, I have the Saddlebaby now and I continue to use it. My husband is 6' and a bit more substantial around the middle, so he's actually able to adjust it in such a way that it doesn't slide up basically it's riding on his gut instead of his ribs.
He's really digging it, so there's an atta-boy from The Big Guy. I love the functionality of having her secure and continue to try new things to make it more comfortable. Next step: Adding some padding along my shoulders to reposition the seat just a bit so it sits properly against my neck, reclines a tad so my kid settles naturally into the seat, and hopefully eliminates the pressure point discomfort. Side note: Hey, Saddlebaby! Just maybe design the saddle for people with normal people-like necks. Our 3yr old loves being free to roam around the places we explore but his legs get tired.
He outgrew his hiking backpack and refuses to stroller we rarely used one since he was born but did not like the unstable feeling of being on Daddy's shoulders. We saw an add for the Saddle Pack and thought we would give it a try. This AM he and daddy went on a 2hr hike and this afternoon we went to the zoo. He loved it. He was able to get the rest he needed and Daddy was comfortable.
We liked how easy it was to get him up and down. Our only complaint was the backpack curls up and away from the back at the bottom and my husband feels like the waist strap cuts into him. We will definitely Ccontinue to use this regularly.
One person found this helpful. Kid loves it. I love it. Everyone who sees it loves it. Best part is having my hands free. The only draw back is the fit. It tends to ride up a bit. And it doesn't fit well for my wife.
There are plenty of ways to adjust it but really once you dial it in for one person you should leave it. The saddle pops off to make a perfectly handy backpack. Also expect to get a lot of people asking about it, it's a conversation starter. Not as comfortable as he thought it would be.
Worked better with four year old, who would sit up straight and trust that she was safe, than it did with two year old who kept leaning forward to grab daddy's head. It is different than a metal frame Great product. It is different than a metal frame carrier in that all the weight on this back pack is on your shoulders, and not distributed.
So I can imagine on a longer walk, your shoulders could get pretty tired. There were two options for this gizmo and I picked the one with the backpack. I only got the saddle.

It also isn't the most comfortable. Ok, this doesn't fit me very well though I can make it work but it fits my husband pretty well.
